Dirt and Dirty Teeth

When creating dirty teeth use need to take the moisture from the teeth so the tooth enamel has something to stick/dry to otherwise it wouldn't be effective.
It is important to pour some into a lid or onto a dish then using cotton buds you can dab it onto the teeth to create a dirty effect. It is important to let the tooth enamel to dry so that what you have created stays how you want it to. Also to remove this you need to use surgical spirit on a cotton bud to remove it from the teeth.
Then to create dirt you need earth powder mixed with water then to rub it onto the hand and could also use face masks as it creates a similar affect, then to add to it you could spray some fake blood.

Health and Safety
When using the surgical spirit be careful if you get the tooth enamel on the lip as it can sting and hurt when you try to rub it off. Also when applying the tooth enamel the teeth need to be dry to work effectively so ask your model to dry get the moisture off of their teeth and to either hold their lip up and out of the way or to keep it above their front teeth.

Makeup Practise

When trying out the makeup for my character I realised that using the Kryolan foundation to even out the skin didn't work well as when I used Glycerin over the top it didn't work very well as the Glycerin mixed with the foundation. This might have been because I didn't powder the face which stopped the Glycerin from just rolling down the face.
I thought making the skin look clear and glowing would suit my chosen character but it doesn't work well with the Glycerin so I will try my models foundation with it and if it doesn't work then I will just use moisturiser and concealer under the eyes and will correct any imperfections.
Also when doing this I feel that the red eyeliner in the waterline would look effective as your eyes tend to get bloodshot and red when your upset. Also when looking at films with someone crying I looked closely at the makeup and where they had used it. The typical places tend to be the nose, the cupids bow and under the eyes and brows. I wanted to try using the glycerin under the nose and from the inner corner of the eyes to make the model look upset and flustered.

When creating tears i got Glycerine onto a brush and dabbed it onto the skin until there was enough to fall down the face.

Health and Safety
It is important to keep the Glycerine away from the eyes as if it gets into the eyes it can hurt the model which will ruin the makeup and can hurt the models eyes.

Late 19th Century Hair

To start it is important to put the hair into a centre part in with the pin tail comb then section the hair in front of the ears and split both of them sections into two. Then wrap one of the smaller sections from the top section landscape and repeat for the second part of this section. Then move onto the next section and wrap one of the smaller sections portrait using the pointy part of the pin tail comb to tuck away any of the fly aways. Then repeat with the next part of this section.

Now section the back part of the hair from behind the ears into 3 sections with the bottom section having less hair. Tie the first two sections up separately so that you can curl them and add height to the hair style. Ensure that you are creating period curls as other curls wont be relevant for this hairstyle. Now that both sections are curled you could plait and clip the top section to clip the separate curls to add more to the hairstyle. Once the top section of curls are clipped and placed where you want them to be repeat that step with the next section remembering that you can have curls hanging down as it blends easier with the bottom section and it looks nice when some of the curls are left down as it gives the hairstyle more length and makes it look more subtle and feminine.
With this I feel the main thing I struggled with was where to place everything because having the two different sections meant there was a line so I had to place the hair over that so it wasn't visible. To improve I would make the line between the sections more subtle by creating a zig zag section as I could hide it easier. I feel this hairstyle would be perfect for my character Sibyl for the Continuity assessments as she is like a princess and is the kind of character that would always quite put together.

My Hair ideas

  • The picture of dorian gray was set in the late 19th century which means the hairstyle I create needs to conform to this era.
  • As Sibyl is quite a elegant and beautiful character I would expect her hair to be quite princess like. Which means it should involve a lot of curls and for it to look very put together but not perfect as I want her to look upset.

The importance of Continuity in TV and Film

How I imagine Sibyl to look

Sibyl Vane

As she is Dorians first love I feel that she would be a very elegant and beautiful girl to have caught his attention. Making my own version of this character I would want to make my model look immaculate and perfect with glowing skin with lovely princess like hair as she is a very innocent and delicate character.
When I create my version of this character I would like to base it just before she takes her own life so with her crying and very weak looking as it is a turning point in Dorian's life as he starts to realise that the painting is growing old instead of him and he is also filled with guilt when he realises that Sibyl has taken her own life.
I would like my model to wear something blue to suggest her status and have also chosen a model with fair skin as I feel it is best suited for my chosen character.
I imaging Sibyl to be quite shy and elegant which I would want to come across within my images. This may be portrayed through what she is wearing and the pose she would be in. Also with me choosing to represent her before she takes her own life I will need to capture the feeling of being very down and upset through the makeup and hair.
I want her to have tears running down her face, perfect hair but a little messy as she is upset, a red nose and cheeks as people get a bit flustered when they are upset.

Practising Continuity 2

Comparing this to the first bruised jaw I did I feel there is very subtle differences and that I was able to follow the steps I did for the first attempt. However if I was to improve this I would blend it out more as some of the colours I used look a bit too harsh. However I still feel that this looks quite effective. Also I feel that for my first attempt/practise of continuity I did quite well. However for my actual continuity the makeup is quite simple the main thing I'm worried about with the makeup is recreating the tear as it is something I need to add just before I take the picture and I don't want to practise it too much as it will make it hard for my to be happy with the end results as I will have loads of practises to compare it to. Also with my design the hair is very complex and I will struggle greatly recreating it as the hairstyle is quite detailed and includes a bow which I need to ensure is in the same place as before. However I feel if I take my time and practise the aspects i'm worried about it should be fine.

Practising continuity 1

To start I used the Illamasqua primer to make the base quite shiny and radiant as bruises are quite shiny to start with. Then I got a small amount of yellow on the back of my hand then using a foundation brush I patted it onto my jaw line and blended it out with my hand to ensure it wasn't as prominent as it was initially. Then I started by adding some red to make the area more of a pink colour as my base for all of the other colours I am going to be using. Then add more red in patches to show irritation and tender parts. However looking at it at this stage I felt the red was too bright so added some purple to dull the red out. This also was still too bright so I decided to mix the red with a tiny bit of black to darken it up so certain parts will stand out. Also ensure it is brought down the next as I kept it on the jaw and realised it looked too fake.
Something that worries me about continuity and how easy it is to tell if it doesn't look the same and as a makeup artist you need it to look exactly the same. It can ruin a makeup artist if it isn't as you wont be taken seriously.

Creating tears

When I used Glycerin over the top of the base I had already put on the face didn't work very well as the Glycerin mixed with the foundation.
Also when looking at films with someone crying I looked closely at the makeup and where they had used it. The typical places tend to be the nose, the cupids bow and under the eyes and brows. I wanted to try using the glycerin under the nose and from the inner corner of the eyes to make the model look upset and flustered.
When creating tears I got Glycerine onto the end of a brush and dabbed it onto the skin until there was enough to fall down the face.

Health and Safety
It is important to keep the Glycerine away from the eyes as if it gets into the eyes it can hurt the model which will ruin the makeup and can hurt the models eyes.

Creating sweat, fever and pallor

When creating a look it is important to have real images to work with so you can ensure it looks realistic. To start you can mix the Kryolan supra colour to create a light/translucent colour to create red cheeks and red around the eyes and nose. This will make the model look unwell and bunged up.
Also when trying to create a sweaty look you need Glycerin as it creates a clammy look which makes it look more realistic. The Glycerin should be applied under the nose and at the top of the forehead as they are the natural places you sweat.

With this I feel I it didn't look as realistic as it could have but as it was the first time I had tried to create this kind of look I feel it didn't didn't go too bad. If I was to improve this I would use less red as I feel that it looks too unrealistic and would look better if I had used more of a pink colour then builded it up more as when I first tried to make the model look like she had a fever the red looked too harsh but I thought I'd make it work.

Health and safety
When creating this look you need to be careful that you don't get the Glycerine in the models eye as it would sting and hurt the model also making you look unprofessional which is something you would want to avoid.
