How I will show Claudia in my images

I would make my character more touch as there are a lot of supernatural characters and would also probably encourage her to become supernatural. I would need to make my character realise that life isn't the way she had see on Tv so would make her experience a lot outside of films and Tv which would make her a stronger character. She would be desirable but would have something that is different about her to make her stand out. She would appeal to the audience demographic as she will stand out because she is so beautiful and almost glows whenever you see her however inside she would be feeling very anxious and will fear a lot of things due to to her agoraphobia which she had under control when she was with Quentin as he made her feel safe but now without him she has it worst then ever.

I chose the word white rose as white suggests purity and Claudia seems quite pure but also has quite a dark side to her which is why I like the ideas of having blood on the rose from her crying as she has become a vampire and misses Quentin so is quite upset. Also the white rose symbolises Quentin as he used to always bring white roses to her because they were her favourite.

For my images I quite like the idea of her kneeling down in a forest kind of area with a white rose in her hands as she has come across one in the forest. It automatically reminded her of Quentin which makes her reminisce on the good times they had.

I want to leave her hair down and straight to make her look put together and pretty with very subtle makeup as she will be crying.

How I am going to show Mrs Laderman's alter ego in my images

When thinking about how I could show Mrs Laderman I struggled as I knew it would be very hard for my to find a 40 year old women who would be able to model for me but then I came to the realisation that Mrs Laderman is supposed to have an alter ego and her alter ego can be a younger version of herself who can shape shift as in true blood there is already shape shifters which means that my character would be able to fit in. She would be quite a dark and mysterious character that wouldn't leave her house very often but when she does leave her house it is only at night. Even though Mrs Laderman is quite mysterious and strange she would also be very kind hearted when it comes to Claudia and would help her to control her Agoraphobia because she is struggling more then ever now that she has moved to a new place. 

I want her to look quite unhealthy and tired but also quite vulnerable as my picture will be based around just after she has shape shifted so I want to make her look dirty and very tired/unwell but will get my model to wear a strapless top so that from the shoulders up she will look even more vulnerable as in true blood after someone has shape shifted and turned back to their natural self their clothes are ruined and they are less in their natural state. I will backcomb the hair to make it look messy and will out leaves and twigs in the hair to show that she has been in the woods or some kind of forest.

Mrs Laderman moving to this new town has an alter ego that is 20 years younger then she is now. I want the images to show Mrs Laderman's younger self when she first became a shape shifter as she is going to look vulnerable an helpless. However she causes trouble around the town and only awakens at night. The colour of Mrs Laderman's eyes change colour and become black with an orange strip on the outside which looks very creepy and striking.

Make up in Motion shoot - Makeup practise for Claudia

Here is one of my practises for the makeup on my model playing 'Claudia'. When designing the makeup for my character I looked at the images from True Blood when the characters cried blood as I wanted to see if it was singles tears or more than that and it was varied so I practised 2 different looks on my model.

Looking at the first image with one tear I feel it looks more believable as its more subtle then multiple tears. 

Also when I first practised this I was using normal fake blood which came out too much of a bright red and also stained the face so luckily the special effects Coagulated Blood that didn't drip so that I had more time to take my images without the tear moving too much.

Luckily the Coagulated Blood had turned up in time for my next practise and I was able to try out multiple tears to see how it looked and if it looked realistic enough or if it was the kind of look I was going for.

Looking at the images now I can see that more then one tear looks too fake and just isn't what I want in my images so I will create just one tear on both eyes as I feel it looks more realistic and elegant which is what I was as Claudia is supposed to be very pure despite becoming a vampire which is why I will be styling my model in a white dress as white suggests purity. Also the model will be holding a white rose supposedly from 'Quentin' her imaginary boyfriend that she hat to leave behind when moving to this small town. With this show I will be just keeping the hair stair as it doesn't need to be very extravagant due to her being upset.

True Blood Hairtsyles

In true blood the hairstyles aren't very adventurous which makes me want to avoid creating a hairstyle that is too complex as it would make my characters stand out too much which is what I would want to avoid.


Sookie's hairstyle especially are very low maintenance and include curls and beach waves. This was probably down to her working a lot and also being in the thick of most of the drama meaning she would have very little time to herself however she did always manage to look put together and well presented despite this. I can relate my character to Sookie quite a lot which makes me feel that my character should have very natural makeup not including the tears of blood as she is now a vampire so will be a bit different to Sookie but I want my character to just have straight hair as she should look like a natural beauty and not like she has spent ages getting ready.




Pam who is seen as one of the more sinister characters has quite a sexy style and always has big and voluminous hair. A lot of the time wearing leather and dark clothing but also scarlet reds. This makes her look like a fierce character a lot of the time. I want Claudia to be different from Pam as Claudia is supposed to be more pure and kind hearted but with a bit of a dark side to her. However Pam does have a bit of a vulnerable side to her and reminds me of my character Mrs Laderman as Mrs Laderman is quite a strong lady but her alter ego will be showed as very vulnerable as she is a shape shifter and has lots of different sides and mysteries to her.



Jessica is the one you have to feel sorry for but she still has the fierce side to her. Her hair is rarely straight but still isn't too much she seems to experiment more with her makeup as it can be very natural and neutral then it goes to being quite dramatic. I feel that I would prefer Mrs Laderman's alter ego to be like Jessica as it fits more. Jessica when she first turned into a vampire was helpless and extremely vulnerable but once she got the hang of it she became a very bold and fierce women but still with that kind hearted side to her.

Horror: the film genre where men don't have all the fun

In this article it is discussed how women can be sexualised in horror films as it says 'And while directors such as Dario Argento ('if they have a good face or figure I would much prefer to watch them being murdered than an ugly girl or man) and Brian De Palma have expressed a preference for menacing or killing beautiful women in their films, this doesn't mean their work is devoid of feisty heroines.' This shows how women can be sexualised as it is rare to see an ugly women or man in a horror movie being the victim. And as it says in the article people prefer to see the beautiful women die in a film as they can sexualise them which also fits with Laura Mulvey's male Gaze which is applied in nearly every horror film as there will typically be a dum blonde or the women will more frequently be the victim rather then the villain. Also a lot of the horror films typically make the younger actors and actresses become the possessed character as it catches your attention more and when children are involved it grips the audiences attention more due to children stereotypically starting of as an innocent child turning into some kind of monster that the adults can't even control. 

Horror movies seem to be extremely popular mainly because it has no specific gender demographic which is discussed in the article as horror films have elements that will make you scream, cry, laugh and smile which make it the perfect type of film to watch as a couple. It isn't a gender specific genre which is why it makes it so popular. Also near enough every horror movie has a pretty women for the men to fix their attention to and the women will often have a strong male that comes to the women's saviour that they can fantasise over.

Female Archetypes of American Horror Story

This article talks about the different types of female characters you tend to see in horror tv series and movies specifically talking about the American Horror Story. It discusses how they have pushed a lot of boundaries but when it comes to women is it reinforcing archetypes.
It then goes on to pinpoint some of the female characters in the 'murder house' who make up its foundation.

The scorned woman - I wasn't quite sure what this meant so I searched it and it means 'to refuse to do something because one is too proud'. In the horror house it is Vivien Harmon who is the scorned woman as she has been through miscarriages, a cheating husband and a home invasion. However very rarely will you see her properly affected by these things as she is a strong and proud women that doesn't like to show her weaknesses.

The Cougar - This is the next door neighbour as she tends to enjoy the company of younger men but is also shown as abusive as she cant accept her daughter who isn't seen as beautiful in her eyes and she struggles to accept her as a normal girl and can't see past her daughter having Down Syndrome and pushes her away as he daughter just wants to be seen as beautiful and normal which is understandable.

The Innocent - The cougars playful daughter who has Down Syndrome. Her innocence makes her one of the shows more endearing and kind hearted characters. All she wants is to be pretty and to be seen as a normal girl as her mother is extremely vain and makes her feel like she can't excepted by other people because of it. However she is reminded frequently by her mother and society that she is not a normal and pretty girl which is unfair and makes the audience feel sorry for her.

The Fatalist - This is Vivien Harmon's daughter Violet who is a goth girl outsider. She struggles with depression and cuts herself a lot which is shown on the show regularly. She deals with bullying, suicide attempts and drug overdoses due to the constant arguments and drama with her parents and with her not fitting in with anyone at school she feels lost and alone.

The Femme Fatale - I wasn't quite sure what this one meant so searched it and it means an attractive and seductive woman, especially one who will ultimately cause distress to a man who becomes involved with her. In this case it is Moira the housekeeper who appears in two forms, for the women she is an older lady with a cloudy eye but for the men she is a young and sexed up pinup girl in a french maid's outfit complete with garters.

There are more female archetypes in the American Horror Story but I feel these are the main ones that are most frequently seen and involved in mayhem. I feel that American Horror Story does well in exploring the different ways you can portray women as in a lot of Horror series you tend to just see women as the victim but in this series the women are shown as quite dominant and the men are the weaker sex as the husband of Vivien is portrayed as quite weak especially when it comes to Moira the house keeper. I like the way American Horror Story Subverts from the normal Archetypes and feel that this is probably why it is so popular.

Makeup Practise

When trying out the makeup for my character I realised that using the Kryolan foundation to even out the skin didn't work well as when I used Glycerin over the top it didn't work very well as the Glycerin mixed with the foundation. This might have been because I didn't powder the face which stopped the Glycerin from just rolling down the face.
I thought making the skin look clear and glowing would suit my chosen character but it doesn't work well with the Glycerin so I will try my models foundation with it and if it doesn't work then I will just use moisturiser and concealer under the eyes and will correct any imperfections.
Also when doing this I feel that the red eyeliner in the waterline would look effective as your eyes tend to get bloodshot and red when your upset. Also when looking at films with someone crying I looked closely at the makeup and where they had used it. The typical places tend to be the nose, the cupids bow and under the eyes and brows. I wanted to try using the glycerin under the nose and from the inner corner of the eyes to make the model look upset and flustered.

When creating tears i got Glycerine onto a brush and dabbed it onto the skin until there was enough to fall down the face.

Health and Safety
It is important to keep the Glycerine away from the eyes as if it gets into the eyes it can hurt the model which will ruin the makeup and can hurt the models eyes.

• The picture of dorian gray was set in the late 19th century which means the hairstyle I create needs to conform to this era. 
• As Sibyl is quite a elegant and beautiful character I would expect her hair to be quite princess like. Which means it should involve a lot of curls and for it to look very put together but not perfect as I want her to look upset.

As she is Dorians first love I feel that she would be a very elegant and beautiful girl to have caught his attention. Making my own version of this character I would want to make my model look immaculate and perfect with glowing skin with lovely princess like hair as she is a very innocent and delicate character.
When I create my version of this character I would like to base it just before she takes her own life so with her crying and very weak looking as it is a turning point in Dorian's life as he starts to realise that the painting is growing old instead of him and he is also filled with guilt when he realises that Sibyl has taken her own life.
I would like my model to wear something blue to suggest her status and have also chosen a model with fair skin as I feel it is best suited for my chosen character.
I imaging Sibyl to be quite shy and elegant which I would want to come across within my images. This may be portrayed through what she is wearing and the pose she would be in. Also with me choosing to represent her before she takes her own life I will need to capture the feeling of being very down and upset through the makeup and hair.
I want her to have tears running down her face, perfect hair but a little messy as she is upset, a red nose and cheeks as people get a bit flustered when they are upset.

How my character would impact on viewing figures and potential audiences

My character would be seen as 'the innocent' archetype who they would feel sorry for as she seems to get caught up in Dorians lies and with all of his misbehaving which leads to her being broken hearted. Also her death is the turning point in which Dorian realises the painting is changing but he is not. My character would appeal mostly to the female
demographic as she is the character you will feel sorry for as she is so innocent and should have gotten brought into Dorian's tale of lies and selfish decisions. My chosen character Sibyl stood out as she was the first person Dorian had fell for and its at the moment where he see's her for the first time he can't take his eyes off of her. She is important as she helps add the romance aspect to the book and I feel the audience would fall in love with the thought of them together and having a perfect life together but things don't exactly happen like that and it is her death that turns Dorian into a monster as he has lost the person that was keeping him sane and kind hearted.

How my character could be fleshed out in production through styling and makeup.

I want Sibyl to be in a lace blue dress as she would look well presented and like a princess which is why Dorian was so attracted to her. She was seen as beautiful and kind hearted which is how I want her to be seen in my images. I am choosing to capture her at the point of when she is heartbroken an upset because if Dorian just before she kills herself as I thought it would be interesting to experiment with how you can make someone look as if they are upset and crying. I looked at scenes from films where the character had been crying to see what signs there are that show how upset the person. These signs are redness under the eyes and above just under the eyebrows and the nose is usually quite red which shows how flustered you can get when you are upset. Also the nose looks quite shiny and it looks like her nose has been runny and under her nose looks slightly wet which may be from the nose or tears. Also there are tears running down her face which I plan to create using Glycerine.

Sibyl Vane - Character Analysis

Sibyl Vane is such an innocent and kind hearted character which doesn't always work to her advantage as it makes it easy for people to take advantage of her compassionate side. She is such a beautiful and natural women which is one of reason Dorian became so attracted to her.

"I love Sibyl Vane. I want to place her on a pedestal of gold and to see the world worship the woman who is mine. What is marriage? An irrevocable vow. You mock at it for that. Ah! don't mock. It is an irrevocable vow that I want to take. Her trust makes me faithful, her belief makes me good. When I am with her, I regret all that you have taught me. I become different from what you have known me to be. I am changed, and the mere touch of Sibyl Vane's hand makes me forget you and all your wrong, fascinating, poisonous, delightful theories." 

She is so pure which is something Dorian used to be until it got spoiled which is why he is so attracted to her as he sees himself in her and being with her makes him feel like a better and more kinder soul. However she is too naive and doesn't like to believe that someone could be motivation purely by self interest which in a way makes her more vulnerable. 

"Dorian, Dorian," she cried, "before I knew you, acting was the one reality of my life. It was only in the theatre that I lived. You came oh, my beautiful love! and you freed my soul from prison. You taught me what reality really is. You had made me understand what love really is. My love! My love! Prince Charming! Prince of life! I have grown sick of shadows. You are more to me than all art can ever be. What have I to do with the puppets of a play?" 

When things get too much with Dorian as she has had such a sheltered life before meeting him she struggles greatly and suicide becomes the only way out of it for her. This was a turning point for dorian as it is when he realises he is becoming a monster and notices a change in the painting for the first time. 
On screen I see my character as a beautiful women who almost sparkles and is like a diamond to Dorian as she is what makes him want to be a better man. I would imagine that she would wear a lot of white and pastel colours as she is such a pure character. When designing my character I decided I wanted to base it around when she was heart broken just before she killed herself and thought about what makes someone look like they are upset and what signs show someone is or has been crying. When thinking about this things like Swollen eyes, puffy face, red eyes, runny nose, slumped posture and the face may be quite red and worked up. 
When I create and plan the makeup for my character I will look closely as scenes where people are crying to see what other makeup artists have done to show the character crying so that I can make it look as real as possible.

What is high definition broadcasting and how it affects hair and makeup artists.

High definition (HD) broadcasting began in 2006 in United Kingdom and it displays high definition displays and quality. It affects make up and hair artists a lot because the quality on the TV are more high standard than before and the audience can see the details of people on the TV more clearly. For example when the camera zooms in, you can see the close up of the makeup and hair styling of the person on TV. It is very important that for makeup artist to understand how lighting works and how it affects the makeup look on TV or film as it might be different to what you see in person. 
It is a problem for makeup and hair artists as if the makeup isn't up to scratch it will be visible on tv and will make the makeup artist look unprofessional. Also with the hair artists if there are any stray hairs or if the hair doesn't look right whoever is watching will see what's wrong with it which will look bad on the artist. Also the tv show or film wont be taken seriously which is something they would want to avoid.

The Art of Gothic: Britain's Midnight Hour Episode 3 - Blood for Sale: Gothic Goes Global

Episode 3 leaves the imaginary fears and horrors from the two previous episodes behind. Instead it touches upon the real horrors of mechanised warfare in 1914. With WW1, the English flavoured Gothic revival proved almost purpose built to encapsulate the horrors of the young 20th century. The third episode also included a short segment about The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927). Which is about a serial killer known as 'The Avenger' is on the loose in London, Murdering Blonde women. A mysterious man arrives at the house of Mr and Mrs. Bunting looking for a room to rent. However there is a twist as the Bunting's daughter is a blonde model and is seeing one of the detectives assigned to the case. The detective becomes jealous of the lodger and begins to suspect he may be the avenger. I found this part of the episode interesting as even at this early start there was the blonde girl as the victim the the films which is still something that occurs now.
I found all episodes of The Art of Gothic Horror intriguing and within each episode there was a specific story or person that he spoke about that stuck out to me. All 3 episodes were extremely informative in the sense that he was able to explain all of these different aspects of Gothic Horror without boring you as he used humour in their as well. However it was quite hard to keep up with some of the things he was saying as he would move on so quickly. Despite this I was still able to take some information from what he was saying.

The Art of Gothic: Britain's Midnight Hour Episode 2 - The City and the Soul

The late 18th century - the dawn of the industrial revolution.
This episode was intriguing as when thinking about Gothic horror I wouldn't have thought about the city. To me Gothic horror is just a word that means something supernatural or sinister. It's interesting to see all the different aspects of Gothic horror and to see what was impacted by it. However this show is quite hard to get into as Andrew the presenter is very enthusiastic about it which makes it hard to concentrate on specific points he has made as he goes quite fast. Despite this it is still a very informative episode of which somethings I already knew from studying history. Someone he talked about that stood out to me was Mary Shelly who grew up surrounded by visionary idealists who dreamed of creating a better world however she was not one of them. Her mother was Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin a pioneering feminist who died giving birth to Mary. Her father was William Godwin a free thinker an anarchist who gave Mary an extraordinary education introducing her to scientists, philosophers and writers. The first edition of Frankenstein was published, Anonymously in 1818, when Mary Shelly was only 20 years old. Andrew discussed how a lot of authors were ashamed of publishing a Gothic Horror books and would wish they could disappear after publishing it as it would show a sinister side to them. This episode was quite interesting as it was based more around important people and writers in the late 18th century and I found it intriguing finding out things about their lives which could have impacted their writing or how writing a gothic horror book impacted their life afterwards.

The Art of Gothic: Britain's Midnight Hour Episode 1 - Liberty Diversity Depravity

In this episode Andrew Graham-Dixon discusses Gothic Horror and talks about how it implies sinister, supernatural and horror but also is a medieval style of building. Sacred architecture dedicated to the glory of god.
Gothic horror encouraged new kinds of literature and paintings as it impacted quite a lot of things.
The first gothic horror novel was published in 1764.
During this episode it is intriguing that Gothic Horror can mean so many different things and has different meanings to different people.
He talks about how we are confronted with contorted and disfigure bodies that seems to howl and screech in agony and grief but don't seem to question it. Some even gain pleasure through watching Gothic/ Horror films. It is also interesting how Gothic horror impacted artwork and how artists were able to show an aspect of Gothic horror within their paintings. Francis Bacon who is one of the most creative and challenging artist in the 15th century. His paintings were very unique and barely recognisable as human beings which showed the aspect of Gothic horror and how we are confronted with contorted and disfigured bodies.
